Working on this cover, with Banksy’s ‘people’ felt like falling into an abyss. Lines of communication were, at best, sketchy, but always very respectful and polite. In the end, the resulting cover and interview were both fantastic.
Occassionally the magazine required us to be incredibly reactive. This particular week, at the eleventh hour, the planned cover was pulled and in its place we ran this, our response to the riots blowing up all over London that summer. The intention was to try and bring the city back together, try to create some unity…
The result was to be Time Out’s biggest selling issue in a decade, with the hashtag being reappropriated on all manner of merchandise as well as trending on Twitter. A simple act of solidarity, well timed, that struck a chord with people globally.
In 2007 and amid fear and controversy about Islamic extremisim, we wanted to make a powerful statement to reflect the importance of London’s Islamic community. The cover was widely praised and condemned, both in London and across the world. Despite this, it was definitely memorable and got the world talking, which I felt was a good thing.

In addition to the weekly cover, I was responsible for the entire design team, the picture desk and photo studio, who all worked tirelessley to ensure the magazine was designed and sent to print on time every week, often resulting in many late Thursday nights…
